Herbal Medicine

Campbell Clinic specializes in Chinese herbal medicine which is based on over 2,000 years of human practice and experience.  I became passionate about herbal medicine during my graduate studies because of the diagnostic methods, ease of use, and results achieved using herbs.  The modality of herbal medicine has not yet become as widely known as acupuncture, so I’ve answered some common questions below.  Additionally, during our free initial consultation I am happy to answer any concerns or questions.

Why use herbal medicine?

Herbs address the patient’s body, not the symptoms.  For example, there may be several reasons your body is inflamed creating arthritis and the herbs will address these root causes.  The herbs are a chemical-free method to correct imbalances and harmonize the body in a natural, gentle way.  Herbal medicine also avoids the undesirable side effects that come with many western pharmaceutical solutions to health issues.

What kind of herbs are used?

Each herbal formula will be customized to the patient based on the person’s body and treatment plan.  There are about 25 herbs that are most frequently used in my herbal formulas which include ginger, cinnamon, ginseng, licorice, and various flower roots and tree bark.  A part of your treatment plan will be an itemized list of all the herbs in your customized herbal formula.  The combination and dosages of these herbs are based on over 2,000 years of practice by traditional herbalists.

How do I take the herbs?

The herbs are provided in the form of granules which will dissolve in hot water to create a tea.  The granules are concentrated extracts of raw herbs.  The raw herbs are grown, harvested and extracted adhering to the highest standards to maintain their natural and chemical-free state.  Read more about one of our herb providers here https://www.evherbs.com/evshop/

How long will it take to see results?

It sounds like a standard disclaimer, but results vary by patients.  I have seen tremendous results within a few days of taking the herbs and I’ve also seen results after 1 year.  Please remember that the herbs are nature’s medicine and do not have harsh man-made substances in them.  So it may take more effort to make your daily herbal tea, rather than pop a pill, and it make take a few weeks or months to see full results.  But you should feel confident that you are treating your body kindly and working on healing your entire self to achieve full body health.

Can I give my spouse my herbs if they have similar symptoms?

No!  I get this question often because patients see such great results with natural herbs.  The herbs are a customized formula for each patient and do not treat the symptoms.  If two patients have the same symptoms, they will likely be on different herbal formulas.  While the herbs are all-natural and there should not be a damaging reaction, patients should not share herbs.

Will I be on herbs forever?

No.  Once you are back to good health, we will discuss a plan for your future wellness. This plan may or may not include Campbell Clinic. I want to make sure that once healthy, you stay healthy.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

If we decide to work together after the free initial consultation, expect your first appointment to last about an hour.  During this hour we will craft your treatment plan.  I will ask you some questions about your daily health and feel your pulse on both of your wrists.  Your pulse tells me a lot about what is going on internally and will help guide our treatment plan.  We will pick 1 to 3 health goals to achieve over the next few weeks and decide on the appropriate acupuncture and/or herbal medicine treatments.  You will receive your first treatment that day and leave the office with a concrete roadmap to obtaining your optimal health.
